Accelerated Technical Training for Unix Workstation Users

Format

Audience

This is a technical course for Hewlett-Packard and Agilent people getting started in the Unix workstation environment, including:
  • New users of Unix-based, networked workstations
  • Programmers getting started in the Unix environment, as a prerequisite for advanced techniques
  • MPE and PC users adding to their career options
  • Management seeking technical breadth
  • A technical background helps but isn't required

Method

In its method, the course's emphasis is on the practical, with the majority of the classroom time devoted to hands-on activity. Attendees largely set their own paces, with the instructor acting mainly as a facilitator. Historical and theoretical material is kept to a minimum.

Objectives

You will practice and learn to:
  • Be productive with your Unix workstation.
  • Master a repertory of commonly-used Unix commands.
  • Operate the window system.
  • Create, move, rename, copy, print, sort, format, and organize files.
  • Navigate the filesystem.
  • Edit text with vi and/or vuepad.
  • Grant and deny permission to access files.
  • Login to remote systems with telnet and/or rlogin.
  • Transfer files with ftp across the network.
  • Share windows (with SharedX) with users on other workstations.
  • Apply advanced shell techniques including command line editing, filename metacharacters, and aliases.
  • Customize your Unix sessions.
  • Monitor and analyze system processes and performance with ps, glance and/or gpm.

Classroom Setup

Travel outside the San Francisco Bay Area requires reimbursement of the instructor's travel expense.
